(Formal examination or course work)
Question:
Only formal
examinations, written or practical, can give a clear picture of students’ true
knowledge and ability at university level. Continuous assessment like course
work and projects are poor measures of student ability.
How far do
agree with this latter statement?
Answer:
Recently, the
changing of evaluation methods for improving student’s ability at university
level causes two different opinions. Traditionalists believe that an examination
in class approaches the best analyzing the academic performance of students.
Conversely, the evident shown by researchers reveals that, course work and
projects support the comprehension of student’s ability.
At the
first glance, students often feel an excessive fear when they have formal
examination in the end of the term at a school. It means that students are
encouraged for studying hardly in an extensive syllabus. This would cause
amount of fear and stress throughout students. Taking an example in such the
students in class circumstances, they are not able to perform to the best
potential because of this type of assessment. Conversely, joining course work
and projects as the regular assessment can assist to approach the exams in a
relaxed way.
Secondly,
it is firmly believed that formal examinations are purposed to test students’ memory
while continuous assessments and project work can help students doing a huge
number of research and discovering so much information by themselves. With the
aim to test the creativity of student’s ability and performance, the second
method is more efficient way than formal examinations. This means students do
not have to follow all syllabuses at the end of the curriculum.
As far as I
am concern, both course work and project works are far more effective with the
aim to assess the comprehensive ability of students, similar to approach an examination
that benefit for students.
